Gold Findings Jewellery: Can Jump Rings, Clasps & Chains Be Sold?

Gold findings are the small functional components used in jewellery making - jump rings, clasps, ear wires, pin backs, chain ends, crimp beads and bails. If you have accumulated gold findings from craft projects or jewellery repairs, you may be wondering: are they real gold? Can they be sold?

The answer depends on the finding's material. Here is how to determine what you have and what it is worth.

At a Glance

What are gold findings?Small jewellery components: clasps, jump rings, ear hooks, chain ends
Real gold findings?Yes - if labelled 14K, 18K, or 22K gold filled/solid
Gold-filled findings?Gold layer only (~5% gold) - low resale value
Solid gold findings?Valuable - same rate per gram as jewellery
Minimum weight to sell?No minimum - but very small amounts may not be worth the trip individually
Best approach?Accumulate findings, then sell all at once by total weight

Types of Gold Findings and Their Real Gold Content

How to Identify Solid Gold Findings

  • Look for a karat stamp: 14K, 18K, or 22K (without 'GF' or 'GP') indicates solid gold
  • Gold-filled findings always have 'GF', '1/20 14K', or similar notation
  • Very small findings may not be stamped - XRF testing at the branch will confirm
  • Solid gold findings feel heavier than base metal or gold-filled ones of the same size
  • Acid test (for large pieces): real gold shows no reaction to 18K acid; base metals react quickly

Selling a Mixed Bag of Gold Findings

If you have a collection of mixed findings, the best approach is:
1. Separate any pieces with 'GF' (gold-filled) or 'GP' (gold-plated) markings - these have minimal value
2. Bring the remaining pieces (solid gold markings or unknown) to an Attica Gold branch
3. XRF testing will confirm which are real gold
4. All confirmed solid gold is weighed together and paid at the IBJA rate for the confirmed purity

Even a collection of very small clasps and jump rings can add up. At ₹13,965/g for 22K, even 5 grams of findings is worth ₹69,845.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sell gold clasps and jump rings in India?

Yes - if they are solid gold (14K, 18K or 22K). Bring them to any Attica Gold branch for XRF testing and weighing.

What is the minimum amount of gold I can sell?

No strict minimum, but very small amounts (under 1g) may not be practical to sell separately. Accumulate findings before visiting.

How do I know if my findings are solid gold or gold-filled?

Look for GF in the marking (gold-filled) vs just 14K/18K (solid). XRF testing at the branch gives a definitive answer.

What are gold-filled findings worth?

Very little - the gold layer represents only about 5% of the total weight.

Can I mix findings from different karats?

Yes - they will be XRF tested and the mixed weight will be assessed by average purity, or separated by karat if very different.

Do earring hooks need to be 18K to have gold value?

If stamped 18K (or 22K/14K without GF/GP), yes - they are solid gold and have resale value at the IBJA rate.

What about loose gold chain links?

Same rules - if solid gold (hallmarked 14K-22K without GF/GP), they are valued by weight and purity at the IBJA rate.
