Green Channel vs Red Channel: Which to Use
| What You Are Carrying | Channel to Use |
|---|---|
| Jewellery within duty-free limit (20g/40g), no bars or coins | Green Channel |
| Jewellery above duty-free limit | Red Channel - declare and pay duty |
| Any gold bars, coins or biscuits (regardless of quantity) | Red Channel - duty from first gram |
| Foreign currency above $5,000 USD + gold combination | Red Channel |
| Not sure? | Always use Red Channel when in doubt |
What Happens During Customs Inspection
- Customs officers may use X-ray scanners and physical inspection at both Green and Red channels
- If gold is detected in Green Channel that should have been declared, it may be seized
- At the Red Channel, you declare, present purchase receipts if available, and pay assessed duty
- Customs calculates duty on the CIF (Cost + Insurance + Freight) value of the gold
- Payment is accepted in INR, major foreign currencies, or card at the airport customs counter
- You receive a receipt for duty paid - keep this for your records
Penalties for Non-Declaration
If gold above the duty-free limit is found at the Green Channel:
• The gold may be seized
• A fine of 100–300% of the evaded duty may be imposed
• In serious cases, COFEPOSA (Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act) may be invoked
The penalties far exceed the duty that would have been payable - always declare.
